Background: | Usutu virus is an emerging disease that is spread by Culex mosquitoes to wild birds (Blackbird pictured above) or bats which act as amplifying hosts, and to humans which act as accidental or dead-end hosts. The virus was first described in 1959 in South Africa, and has spread to Europe in or before 1996. In 2009 the first case of neuroinvasive Usutu virus infection was described in a 60-year old woman in Italy. More neuroinvasive infections caused by Usutu virus were described in a Croatian study in 2013. There is no vaccine or specific treatment available for Usutu virus. Usutu virus NS1 protein has been produced to the same standards as other NS1 proteins, and is presented as a highly purified liquid protein. |
