Background: | The Tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) is a Flavivirus which is transmitted to humans through a bite from an infected tick. Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is endemic in Europe and Asia with an average of 8,500 cases per year in Europe (https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/page/yellowbook-home-2014/). TBE infected patients typically present with influenza-like symptoms and the disease is neuroinvasive often manifesting as meningitis, encephalitis or meningoencephalitis. Long-lasting or permanent neuropsychiatric sequelae are reported in 10 to 20% of patients. |
