Background: | Human metapneumovirus (hMPV) is a negative-sense, non-segmented, single-stranded RNA virus of the family Pneumoviridae. It's genome is approximately 13,000 nucleotides in length and comprises eight genes that encode nine proteins: The Nucleoprotein (N), Phosphoprotein (P), Matrix protein (M), Fusion protein (F), Matrix-2 proteins (M2-1 and M2-2), Small Hydrophobic (SH) protein, Glycoprotein (G), and the Large (L) polymerase protein (Shafagati et al., 2018). Like the paramyxoviruses, the N, L, and P proteins form the viral replication complex of hMPV and hMPV also exhibits a typical paramyxovirus-like morphology, ranging from 150 to 600 nm in size. There are two major genetic lineages of hMPVs: A and B, which are further divided into the sub-lineages A1, A2, B1, and B2 All HMPV genes fall into these four clades, suggesting that genome recombination is very rare (Yang et al., 2013). While both lineages co-circulate, one lineage tends to dominate each year. hMPV spread through direct or close contact with infected individuals or objects harbouring the virus. The symptoms and presentation of hMPV disease are similar to other respiratory viruses that cause respiratory tract infections, including cough, runny nose, sore throat, fever, wheezing and difficulty breathing. |
