Background: | Yersinia are gram-negative cocci acquired after ingestion of contaminated food or water. Y. enterocolitica is more frequently encountered than Y. pseudotuberculosis in the United States. Yersinia spp. are members of the Enterobacteriaceae. They are short, pleomorphic Gram-negative rods or coccobacilli, which often exhibit bipolar staining. Three taxonomic species of the genus Yersinia – Y. enterocolitica, Y. pseudotuberculosis and Y. pestis – cause human infections (Riahi et al., 2021). Yersinia enterocolitica and Yersinia pseudotuberculosis both have many mammalian and avian hosts, including humans, and cause clostridial enteritis–like disease in goats. Rodent and bird hosts may be important reservoir populations for infections in domestic animals. An feature peculiar to some of the Yersinia bacteria is the ability to not only survive, but also to actively proliferate at temperatures as low as 1–4 centigrade (e.g., on cut salads and other food products in a refrigerator). Yersinia enterocolitica is the most common species causing enteric yersiniosis, a specific enteric pathology including acute gastroenteritis (with fever, abdominal pains and diarrhea), mesenteric adenitis (pseudo-chirurgical appendicular symptoms), bacteremia and postinfectious immunologic complications (arthritis and erythema nodosum). The most important source of infection is believed to be contaminated porcine products. |
